The Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve is nearly 900 acres, most of which is managed as a natural habitat to protect and preserve uncommon local trees, plants, and animals of the Sandhills area of North Carolina. The Longleaf Pines are mixed on the rolling sandy hills with wiregrass, hardwoods such as black oaks, and other plants indigenous plants. The preserve is periodically burned as would occur in nature to help perpetuate the Longleaf Pines, which require fire to propagate. Some portions of the preserve have tracts of Longleafs that are over 200 years old.
Rare or uncommon species of animals at Weymouth Woods include the
red-cockaded woodpecker, eastern fox squirrel, Pine Barrens tree frog,
and bog spice bush. Commonly seen wildlife includes salamanders, snakes,
skinks, and box turtles.
If you are looking for a natural walk away from town within easy drive, then the preserve is a great place to visit. The visitors center is also a great way to learn about the plants and animals of the sandhills. The sounds of the night exibiting examples of various nocturnal animals is a nice experience and good choice for kids. You can take your dog, but you must keep it on a short leash.
